Sauvage

France 2018 | 97 minutes | French | Hebrew, English subtitles

Leo is twenty-two. He has no permanent address, and mostly sells his body on the streets for cash. Men come and go, but he stays in the same spot. He yearns for love but cannot say what lies ahead. He seems to be focused on the present, while the future is obscure. Prior to filming, screenwriter/director Camille Vidal-Naquet researched his subject for three years, an investment that clearly paid off—this is an authentic, reflective, intimate, and graphic, yet not voyeuristic, portrayal of a transparent character operating in regions we take care to repress. Félix Maritaud’s (Beats Per Minute), riveting performance helps Vidal-Naquat remind us that delicate souls inhabit even the most feral places.
