Maria Theresia von Paradis is a prodigious talent on the ivory keyboard who entertains the Viennese aristocracy of the late 18th century. Her genius, however, comes at a price: Maria is blind. In desperate search for a cure, her parents send her to the home of Dr. Mesmer, a “miracle” healer whose methods turn Maria’s life around. But she soon discovers that those she trusted most do not necessarily have her best interest in mind. Esteemed Austrian director Barbara Albert adapts the life story of a marginalized historical figure and creates a captivating film with a universal message. Matched by outstanding performances, the film’s rigorously composed set and costume designs transport viewers to a fascinating world.
