In Portland, fifteen-year-old Charlie Thompson and his father are eager to make a fresh start. But with his father caught up in a maelstrom of his own, Charlie finds refuge at the race track, where he gets a job caring for an old horse named Lean-on-Pete. His employer (Steve Buscemi) and jockey, Bonnie (Chloë Sevigny) fill the familial void in Charlie’s life—until he discovers that Pete’s life is in danger. Andrew Haigh (45 Years) adapts Willy Vlantin’s novel in one of this year’s most subtle and beautiful films. Haigh perfects his talent for creating profound human portraits and cooperates with seasoned cinematographer Magnus Joenck and promising young actor Charlie Plummer (Best Emerging Actor Award at Venice FF).
