The Women Who Run Hollywood

France 2016 | 52 minutes | English, French | English, Hebrew subtitles

Only few know that the first talkie was directed by Alice Guy-Blaché, long before The Jazz Singer, while the first color film was produced by Lois Weber, who directed over 300 movies. Frances Marion wrote screenplays for movie star Mary Pickford, winning two Oscars, while Dorothy Arzner was the most powerful Hollywood director for decades. What do all of them have in common? They are all women and they have all been forgotten. Incredibly, it was only in 2010 that a woman – Kathryn Bigelow – won the Oscar for Best Director. Through interviews and rare archival materials, this documentary seeks to restore the women who ran Hollywood to their rightful place in the pantheon of cinema.
